PhD Position in Rock Deformation/Petrology at the University of Tromsø
Applications are invited for a PhD research position for 4 years to join a team of researchers at the University of Tromsø. The successful candidate will undertake a field-based study of naturally deformed rocks from a Caledonian nappe stack in Northern Norway. The project will focus on deformation mechanisms, kinematics, fluid infiltration and P-T conditions of deformation. The work will comprise: (1) Field mapping of selected areas of tectonic contacts. (2) Analysis of the deformation microstructures (shear senses, deformation mechanisms, etc.) including CPO analysis with EBSD, phase distributions, grain size and grain shape analysis and general SEM techniques. (3) Mineral composition analysis and determination of P-T-conditions using thermodynamic modeling. (4) Age determination using Lu-Hf and U-Pb method. (5) Synthesis of the results in a tectonic model for the Northern Caledonides.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with experience in field work and interests in deformation and reaction microstructures, deformation processes, mineralogy, petrology, and fluid-rock interaction. Preference will be given to candidates with documented previous experience in one or several of the following methods: micro-beam analytical techniques, EBSD-analysis, image analysis, microstructural analysis, or thermodynamic modeling of metamorphic conditions. In addition to the research there are part-time teaching obligations as a teaching assistant.
The successful applicant will work in an interdisciplinary team of structural geologists and petrologists at the University of Tromsø (Holger Stunitz, Jiri Konopasek) and with partner institutions in Norway and abroad (NGU Trondheim, UPMC Paris, Charles University in Prague, Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow).

Qualified individuals need to have a MSc-degree in Geosciences at the time of appointment. The appointment will be for a period of 4 years and is available from April 2019.
Further enquiries about the position should be addressed to Professor Holger Stunitz (holger.stunitz@uit.no) or Jiri Konopasek (jiri.konopasek@uit.no).
The deadline for the application is the 15th of November 2018. The application must be submitted electronically via the application form available on: https://www.jobbnorge.no/ledige-stillinger/stilling/158471/phd-position-in-structural-geology-and-petrology
